New Music
Yes, original songwriting still exists
I have to admit, my music collection was getting stale. I would find myself "Nexting" through playlists for a fresh song, something to turn up while I hacked away in the middle of the night. So, I decided to go "back to my roots."
Well, okay, these songs/artists have nothing to do with my roots (other than Chad Stokes, formerly of Dispatch, being local to my home state of Massachusetts), but this led me to some new stuff...
State Radio (www.stateradio.com) Us Against The Crown (released in late 2005) Download on iTunes
Ok, so this is not so new, per se, but it is brand new to me. State Radio is the solo project of Chad Stokes, whose reggae-influenced Dispatch tunes always made me sing-a-long and then pick up my guitar and learn to play them. So, I went back to www.Dispatch.com to check things out, then following the links to Chad's State Radio project. This album has so much depth and so much freshaliciousness that I'm now listening to music again instead of business podcasts. Listen to "Waitress," close your eyes, and picture yourself chanting back at a live concert - it will give you chills.
Michael Franti & Spearhead (www.spearheadvibrations.com) Yell Fire! (released July, 2006) Download on iTunes
My friend and client, Tom O'Keefe, turned me on to this guy. For this, I owe him big time. I describe Franti's stuff as a blend of Jack Johnson with Ben Harper and a splash of Bob Marley. There are even hints of The Postal Service (heard on "I Know I'm Not Alone") in the production. This disc has something for everybody, and will probably soon be pumping through Starbucks locations' speakers for the next year or so.
Pete Yorn (www.peteyorn.com) Nightcrawler (released August, 2006) Download on iTunes
Finally, Pete, you put out a new album! I've been waiting on this for a while, ever since I found the single "Undercover" on MySpace (I think it's in the next Spider-Man movie). If you haven't heard Pete Yorn, download all his albums and you will thank me. Mellow, steady rock with excellent songwriting, and huge singalongability.
Enjoy!
