Parenting: It Still Exists!!
Believe it or not, some parents still care.

So, Karena and I are driving down McHenry Ave (best known as the inspiration for the "strip" in American Graffiti) in Modesto today, and we say an interesting sight on a busy corner flanked by Starbucks and other high-end retailers.  It was a boy (probably age 10-12) holding a pretty large sign made of some thin paper, the kind you would find on an art class easel for grade school painting.  At first, we thought it was your run-of-the-mill cheap advertising, since more and more retailers are paying people pennies to hold signs with arrows reading "Diamonds: Cheap" or "1000 Minutes Free with Sprint" - this wasn't the case.  The sign read:

"I haven't been doing my homework, and I have been bad in school.
My parents are teaching me a lesson.
WILL WORK FOR FOOD."

I am completely serious.  Our first reaction: laughter.  Then, we were trying to figure out if this kid was serious.  I mean, he wasn't asking for money, he wanted food in exchange for work.  Our conclusion: The sign was legit, and his parents probably told him they would drive by every half hour to check on him.  Now, that's punishment.

It's refreshing to see creative ways to discipline these days.  It was a harmless yet effective way of showing their child that messing around and blowing off school will ultimately result in his being on the street, begging for food.  I'm sure he was embarrassed the whole time, and when he grows up, he'll have a humorous anecdote to share with his friends, and a classic "You know what my parents did?!" type of story for his children.

Hope it works out for this family.

P.S. Sorry I don't have a photo for this entry, I didn't have my camera phone on me.  Lesson learned.
